The intersections of international and national environmental law can be complex. In Denmark, EU legal requirements for nature protection and conservation are often not fully respected, or directives are interpreted in ways that contradict their original intent. Additionally, nature and climate frequently lose out when it comes to major construction projects or the use of harmful pesticides.
Naturens Retshjælp is a brand-new organization, and the grant from KR Foundation will help them set up a secretariat and start representing the legal interests of our planet.
Nature’s Legal Aid
To address this, a new initiative called Naturens Retshjælp (Nature’s Legal Aid) has been launched to provide legal support for nature and climate in Denmark. The organization advises and assists civil society organizations and citizen groups on environmental and climate-related legal matters by: 1) Enhancing legal knowledge and expertise among NGOs and individuals; 2) Building a network of law students and lawyers interested in working on environmental and climate issues; 3) Taking on cases to ensure that municipalities, the state, and private companies comply with relevant regulations on nature and climate.
